Eating to many carbohydrates and simple sugars, emotional stress, alcohol consumption and physical stresses such as disease, inflammation, and excessive exertion ( tennis, bicycling, and running) are some of the many ways Americans lose magnesium, a critical trace element essential to physical health and well-being.
In this issue I will explain the benefits of magnesium. the sources, roles in the body, functions of magnesium, symptoms of deficiency, and reasons for magnesium supplementation.
Magnesium is a key element in cellular metabolism. The higher the metabolic rate of a cell, the higher its magnesium requirement. The mineral is also extensively involved in vital enzyme systems throughout the body. Its positive charge triggers many enzyme reactions, of which over 300 are known. Even the important nuclec acids of the cells, DNA and RNA, are stabilized by this minerial.
Magnesium is the mineral I find most often as a deficiency in clients. It is also the one mineral I will give to clients based on symptoms while waiting for test results.

  • Nuts - almonds, brazil nuts, cashews
  • Vegetables - soybeans, parsnips
  • Grains - buckwheat, wheat bran, wheat germ, other grains
  • Misc - chocolate, cocoa, brewer's yeast, kelp

Sixty percent of tissue magnesium is located in the skeleton. Most of the rest is within the cells. Magnesium is required for the activation or structure of more enzymes than any other mineral. Many magnesium dependent enzymes cannot use any other mineral as a replacement for magnesium.

.

  • Excretory - prevention of kidney stones
  • Digestive - laxative
  • Nervous - maintains nerve conduction
  • Muscular - prevents tissue calcification, needed for muscle contraction
  • Skeletal - required for bone formation
  • Metabolic - required for energy production, for glucose and fat metabolism, and for protein synthesis
  • Detoxification - required for liver activity

  • Fast metabolism
  • Kidney stones
  • Irritability, Anxiety
  • Muscle cramps, especially after exercising
  • Hyperkinetic behavior
  • Tissue Calcification
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Fast heart rate or Irregular heart beat
  • High blood pressure

  • A high magnesium level often indicates that magnesium is being lost through the hair, resulting in deficiency symptoms such as anxiety and irritability.
  • Low Magnesium can be associated with a fast or slow metabolism, anxiety, irritability and high-strung personality, fatigue, depression, irregular heartbeat, low blood sugar. etc.

  • To prevent calcium build-up in body tissue.
  • To enhance energy production & raise low sodium levels.
  • To offset dietary deficiency.
  • To enhance many magnesium-dependent enzyme systems.
  • Symptomatic - for energy, muscle tightness or cramps, laxative, or irritability.
    • The role of mangesium in important biological processes is extensive. Recognition of both its synergistic and antagonistic roles with other nutrients can greatly enhance its therapeutic effectiveness, thus avoiding nutritionally nduced deficiencies.
As with other minerals, the blood will always maintain normalcy at the expense of tissue stores of mangesium. Tissue mineral analysis of the hair is one of the most valuable laboratory tools for evaluating magnesium status when assessed according to its physiological range with other nutritional factors.

Do not be lulled into a false security by thinking that your magnesium levels are sufficient if you have had blood work done and the results are within range. Often times tissue magnesium levels are low when blood work has been within the normal range. I know - it happened to me.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of magnesium deficiency contact the office to set up a consultation.

It is such a pleasure for me to help you and those closest to you become healthier. Please forward this newsletter to friends, family members or colleagues who might be interested and inspired by it.
